Local youth still defacing monument!

The original surroundings of the Obelisk were just bare heathland, but, at some point, a stand of trees were encouraged to grow and these gradually hid the landmark from sight.  No longer could coach-drivers use it as a way mark.

Unfortunately, because the monument became secluded it became increasingly vulnerable to vandalism and in the 1880s a disastrous fire broke out which destroyed the inner staircase and caused the upper structure to become unsafe.

In more modern times, long after the Sandhurst cadets had moved on to other leisure pursuits the graffiti artist and the lovelorn have continued to leave their mark…………
