This is a nice example of a mid-Victorian ‘villa’ in Gordon Road. Camberley doesn’t really seem to have as many of them as you’d expect – except that the ‘new town’ had hardly got into its stride by then. Called into being to provide provisions and accommodation for the military establishments across the road it wasn’t until later, I believe, that retired army officers started building much larger houses complete with long drives and entrance lodges. These same mansions didn’t long outlast their owners and the whole town had another complete change of character as the commuters moved in and the army eventually all but moved out. What sort of town is it now?
