‘Firlands’ Camberley Military Hospital August 1916

Camberley postcards 3

Someone was asking me recently if I had any information about houses in Camberley used as military hospitals – other than Firlands and Heatherbank (both mentioned by Mary Bennett).  A few days later I saw this postcard, which naturally caught my eye – and no, I didn’t scan it badly, that is how the postcard really looks.

Firlands House was next to Elmhurst Ballet School, but on the west side of Firlands Road.  According to Ken Clarke (Camberley in old picture postcards) when it became a hotel in the 1930s it was ‘The finest residential hotel in the district’ and had  ‘pleasure gardens, a putting green and a tennis court.  It even boasted running water to the bedrooms and central heating.’  It looks a long, rambling building and it was demolished and replaced by Court Gardens in, I think, the 1970s.
