To begin at the beginning…..with Frimley, of course!

Camberley Guide 1950s 15

Here is the very first part (after the adverts) of the 1950s guide to the area that I am sharing this week.

I am delighted that this area of ‘bracing…uplands’ is described as a large residential area – what would they call it now, huge?  I also rather like the idea of the ‘floral loveliness’ somehow helping with the healing of those from ‘chest and lung affections’ – is that a typo, or a use of the word that has died out now?

There are two other interesting items that have ‘died out’ since the book was published – the A30 has lost its status as a ‘Great Road’ and the direct link from Camberley to Woking only remains in the form of a railway embankment with no rails or service.

  1. I love this, though depressing (not surprising) to read that the rail service has got worse over the last 60 years.

I get boring on this but Camberley won’t ever be close to a top 100 town without a faster link to London.
